Back to Freezeout

April 1, 2008 by Jason Savage 2 Comments

Tree in Fog

Well we couldn’t resist paying another visit up to Freezeout Lake and with a short window in the weather we were hoping to grab a few more shots from the migration…

I think I may have mentioned this a few times in my post (ad nauseum) but what the heck happened to Spring? We took off yesterday morning and it was 10 degrees out and the night before a nasty snow storm dumped a bunch of snow in central Montana and even closed a few roads in the area we were heading.

Needless to say our morning drive was slow heading up to Freezeout. We were hoping to hit sunrise on the lake, but with the slow going it looked like it wasn’t going to happen.

We did however run into a nice fog bank on the river with the sun just starting to come up and with the cold temps it was a beautiful scene. We detoured and photographed this area for a while figuring we might as well take advantage of the sunrise.

Finally arrived at Freezeout much later in the morning and by this time all the birds had headed to the fields, so we had to do some stealthy driving to hopefully find another huge flock.

After driving around some of the back-roads we finally found some. Thousands again.

Turned out to be a good morning and warmed some.

However, once again, it’s snowing…
