We we’re getting ready to go to the grocery store the other night and my wife told me to come take a look out back. I was surprised to see what seemed like hundreds of robins all staring at me from every tree in our backyard…
Now we occasionally will see a Robin now and again, but we’ve never been visited by a flock this huge. Coupled with the very cold and strange weather that night and it was a little surreal feeling.
Not wanting to pass up any excuse to pull out my camera, I decided to play around out back with my 300mm and see if I could capture any of our visitors.
I stood there for quite a while watching them feed on our neighbor’s Russian Olive tree and having never really payed much attention to the Robins before as they are such a common bird, I was amused by their behavior and lack of shyness when traveling in large flocks.
Apparently in large flocks they are less vulnerable to predators as they usually have a lookout and are able to watch each others reactions to indicate a threat.
Anyhow it was fun to watch and hopefully the visit by these little guys may be an indicator that winter is finally on it’s way out…
