2019 Montana Weekend Workshops

October 23, 2018 by Jason Savage Leave a Comment

2019 Montana Fall Weekend Workshops are now listed!

We had probably one of the best fall seasons I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been photographing Montana.  Colors were really popping in the western part of the state and we had some great opportunities on our trips.

Both of my Fall Weekend Workshops are located in western Montana, so if you want to visit Montana and don’t have the extra time to commit to a longer workshop, these trips are a great way to get a taste of the Montana landscape in fall.

Here are a few images from this year’s trips.

Here’s a shot from my first outing with Fuji’s rangefinder style mirrorless camera, the X-Pro2. I’m super excited to try out this new system and will be posting a review after I finish putting it through its paces. Being a longtime Canon shooter, I keep dipping my toes in the mirrorless waters to see if I can finally be lured into lightening my load. We’ll soon see.

First impressions, very good so far…

Top Ten Favorites from 2017

December 31, 2017 by Jason Savage Leave a Comment

It’s been a busy year and a fantastic one! Meeting new friends and seeing old friends along the way. We’ve had some really awesome workshops with some wonderful travelers (you know who you are!). There’s certainly been some memorable moments and I really love what I do because of the people I get to meet. I think as photographers we definitely share some like-minded thinking, which explains the great camaraderie, sense of adventure, and too much fun we seem to have on our trips!

This year, like I said, certainly has had some memorable moments and below are just a few of my favorites (top ten to be exact) from our trips. I’m anxiously awaiting 2018’s new workshops and I look forward to meeting those of you who will be joining me. Finishing off 2017 I’m reminded of why I love photography, I can’t think of anything better than exploring the natural world through a lens with amazing people in amazing places. Wishing everyone the best in the New Year!

Fall Workshops

October 31, 2017 by Jason Savage Leave a Comment

Now that fall is on its way out and things in the photo world are giving me a slight break, I thought I would share a few images from our fall workshops this year.

September and October had me up in Glacier National Park, Seeley Swan Valley and my own backyard of the Bitterroot Valley in western Montana chasing fall colors and leading workshops. In mid September the smoke finally cleared from the fires that we were having out west and ushered in snow for the mountains and gorgeous colors throughout Montana.

Enjoy!

Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

Montana Bitterroot Mountains
Early morning at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge.

I had the opportunity to spend yesterday with a friend photographing  Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge on a spectacular Montana morning. As we wandered through the refuge we saw a lot of the usual suspects: ringed-necked pheasants, trumpeter swans, mallards and even a brief glimpse of a great horned owl. But the backdrop of the Bitterroot Mountains was what stole the show with their snow-capped peaks towering over the refuge.Further south the far off Como Peaks with cattails in the foreground looked like a painting in the early morning light.

As one of a handful of important wildlife refuges in Montana, Lee Metcalf encompasses 2800 acres of critical habit for nesting and migratory birds and other wildlife in the Bitterroot Valley. Over 240 different species of birds have been recorded on the refuge which is made up of wetland, grassland, and forest habitat.

Its rich abundance of wildlife and habitat is a reminder of what’s at stake as our wild lands continue to shrink, but also what’s possible with our country’s conservation efforts and management of National Wildlife Refuges.

Barns and Fences

Montana Barn Photography
Barn and Fence, Montana

During my search for more fall colors yesterday, I stumbled across this great barn and white fence just after sunrise. I really liked the way the fence was able to add a prominent foreground element, but also add some very strong lines and contrast to the image.
