I thought I would share a few images from this year’s Glacier National Park Workshop in Montana now that I’m back getting some images edited from my spring and summer trips. As per usual Glacier did not disappoint and as per usual I was reluctant leave:(

Fortunately I will be returning soon to conduct my fall workshop and in the meantime here are a few images of our wanderings this go around.

As I’m catching up on some much overdue editing here, I thought I would share a few images from this year’s Rocky Mountain Front Photography Workshop in Montana. We timed it just right this year with spectacular wildflowers and perfect weather. Spring in Montana is pretty hard to beat, especially in the foothills of the Rocky Mountain Front, enjoy!

Mission Mountains

Montana Mountains
McDonald Peak, the highest in Montana’s Mission Mountain Range at 9,820ft, looms in the distance behind the massive Sheep’s Head Peak at left. These peaks are a backdrop to the small town of St. Ignatius located in western Montana.

Mission Mountains

Montana Fall Photography
Snow-capped Peaks of the Mission Mountains, Montana

I’m still traveling in western Montana this week, chasing elk, bison and fall colors before winter arrives. Peaks are now snow-capped and it’s looking spectacular out here! Here’s one from last night as the last light of day was touching the massive peaks of the Mission Mountains near St. Ignatius. Rising abruptly from the valley floor, the Missions make an impressive backdrop with McDonald Peak, the highest peak in the range, topping out at almost 10,000 feet.

Montana Harvest

Bitterroot Harvest, Montana

It’s certainly harvest time here in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley. I was just wrapping up for the day when I came across this great harvest scene with the sun setting behind the Bitterroots and some fantastic Montana sky.

Layers of Light and Shadow

Rocky Mountains Montana
Layers near the Dearborn River, west-central Montana

Going back through my archives today and found an image that I had taken a few years back. I really liked the elements of layers in the image not only with the landscape and mountains, but also with the layers of light and shadow as well. Using a 200mm focal length enabled me to greater compress  the foreground and background, creating a much more simplistic arrangement.

Heavy Runner Mountain

While exploring near the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park I was treated to an amazing morning with a thick blanket of fog covering the valley floor with Heavy Runner Mountain rising up out of the mist, creating a simple but powerful scene.

Montana summer sunset. Helena, Montana.

At home busy editing this week and thought I would share this one from the archives. I took this just behind our house in our hometown of Helena on a perfect Montana summer night. The St. Helena Cathedral and Sleeping Giant Mountain are two of Helena’s popular landmarks.

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley Montana
Paradise Valley, Montana

I don’t usually shoot a lot of black and white, but sometimes there’s an image that just calls for it. I took this a couple weeks back in the Paradise Valley after a trip into Yellowstone National Park. On my way out I passed this scene of cows, trees, hills and mountains creating some interesting layers in a beautiful Montana late winter scene.
