Fall Workshops

October 31, 2017 by Jason Savage Leave a Comment

Now that fall is on its way out and things in the photo world are giving me a slight break, I thought I would share a few images from our fall workshops this year.

September and October had me up in Glacier National Park, Seeley Swan Valley and my own backyard of the Bitterroot Valley in western Montana chasing fall colors and leading workshops. In mid September the smoke finally cleared from the fires that we were having out west and ushered in snow for the mountains and gorgeous colors throughout Montana.

Enjoy!

Canon Prograf IPF6400 Printer

Thought I would share our new piece of equipment that arrived in the office last week! Needless to say, I’m all excited like a little kid with this thing. Last year I decided to try one of Canon’s desktop printers, the Pixma Pro-10, and was so impressed I seriously started looking into their newer large format printer lines. Previously I had been using Epson with a variety of printers over the years and unfortunately as good as their printers are, I still had numerous ink consumption issues and clogging problems.

With the 6400 I’ve been nothing but blown away so far. The print quality, profile handling and color management has been outstanding and I really haven’t found anything to complain about yet.

A few impressive things to note:

  • 12 color LUCIA EX inks provide a very large color spectrum, with smooth graduations
  • Now includes 130ml ink tank sizes as well as the 300ml, you can also change ink while printing
  • An excellent Print Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop & Canon’s DPP

I’ve also had a chance to start filling our new print orders this last week and it’s been a real treat to work with, I look forward to doing a more in depth review as I get some more time using it. For more info on this and Canon’s other large format printers, here’s a link  www.usa.canon.com

Happy Holidays! Before we ring in the new year, I thought I would share some images from 2011 that I have captured from across Montana. It’s been a great year and it’s always nice to reflect back on the previous year’s images, certainly brings back a lot of great memories from 2011.

Thanks to all who have joined me in classes and workshops this year, I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to share my love for photography with all of you and have had a blast on our trips throughout the state.

I wish everyone the best in the New Year and here’s to many more great photos!

Rocky Mountain Front

Rocky Mountain Front, Montana

Rocky Mountain Front. Canon 5dmkII  50mm 2.5.  ISO100  f11  1/8

I was up near the Rocky Mountain Front earlier in the week and took this shot early morning near Augusta, Montana. Very cold morning with the wind blowing but still no snow to speak of. Winter so far in Montana has been off to a slow start and doesn’t look too promising at least going into next week. Oh well, I suppose we have until May until winter releases it’s grip here and I’m sure something will be coming sooner or later!

Happy Thanksgiving from Montana!

Hope everyone’s enjoying the Holidays and getting out and having some fun. This image was taken just a few miles down the road from my house this week. Everytime I take a picture of a Hay Bale, I ask myself, do I really need another image of a Hay Bale in Montana? But for some reason I continue to keep on taking them…go figure. I suppose if you’re around here long enough, you just can’t avoid it!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Fall colors in Montana

Montana Aspens in Fall

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, been super busy as is the usual this time of year. Our fall window in Montana is a small one and have been trying to take advantage of capturing as much of it as possible lately. This was a shot taken a few days ago up in the Seeley-Swan valley. It was below freezing that morning with a bit of a bite in the air. I think I’ve gotten a little soft with all the 80 degree weather we had trough September as I was freezing my rear off! Fall is definitely here with winter coming very quickly around the corner. Snow was in the upper elevations of the mountains and the fall colors were going strong. Should have some more stuff to share here soon.

National Bison Range

Here are some shots from this week over at the National Bison Range, north of Missoula, Montana. It’s a great place to view and photograph wildlife with the Mission Mountains adding a great scenic backdrop. Bison, Pronghorn, Elk, Deer, Bear are just some of the local big game on the range. It’s a great day getaway if you’re near Missoula, or a stopover on your way up to Glacier National Park via Highway 93.

With all the great stuff to photograph around the area, you’d think getting a few decent shots would be no problem. However, this week it just wasn’t happening. Every once in while I get those trips where it’s just not in the cards and sometimes it seems like packing up and heading home would be more productive. But, it’s times like these that make those day’s where the planets seem to align, that much sweeter.

I did enjoy myself nonetheless and in this particular area of Montana it’s hard not to.

So now I’m shifting gears and getting ready for Fall Photography here in Montana and the northwest. It’s started to cool in the evenings here and you can sense a change in the seasons. This weekend there was even some frost on the ground in the early morning. Definitely getting anxious as Fall in Montana is without a doubt my favorite time of the year in Montana  and probably one of the best times to photograph the state.

Out on the coast this week in Olympic National Park. These are a couple shots from yesterday along Hurricane Ridge and down lower in the Elwha Valley. Not a bad time of year to be out here with warm weather and lot’s of sunshine, not to mention the as always stellar rainforest!

Glacier National Park Photography

Just returned from my annual photography workshop that I teach in Glacier National Park and as usual had a fantastic time with some wonderful people. We had a cold front roll in at the beginning of the workshop and the wind just howled for three days straight, at times it would just about blow you over. They had around 70-80 mile an hour gusts which makes tripod work just about impossible. Despite the high winds we managed to find some great stuff and captured some great images, with the wind dying down the last couple days.

Ferns. Canon 5dmkII  16-35mm2.8II, f13  1/8  ISO400

Of course the Going to the Sun road has been closed and is scheduled to open on July 13, being the latest opening in the Park’s history. The record was July 10, 1943. It was very apparent that the snowfall had been excessive this year as was evident by the avalanche damage driving up the open portion of the Going to the Sun road. Huge trees uprooted and snapped like twigs in many places. Of course the waterfalls are raging right now with all the melting snow and at the lower elevations, possibly because of the late snows, the wildflowers are not the best as in previous years. However we had great ferns and growth in the forest and it was very green.

The next couple of months should be great with the pass finally opening and lots of water in the creeks and rivers. Probably some good skiing up top too!

Here’s  a couple shots from this weekend. I was shooting at the base of the Beartooth Mountains in southern Montana. Man are things looking spectacular right now, the wildflowers were out of this world!
