Pronghorns

Pronghorn

Canon 2x teleconverterSince switching all my camera bodies to full frame last year, I’ve been using Canon’s 2x mkIII teleconverters much more frequently now. In the past the mkII version wasn’t the greatest as far as sharpness was concerned, but with the improvements made to the newer version, I’ve been nothing but impressed.

I frequently pair it with my 500mm and 300mm lenses and sharpness, contrast, and speed have  not only been acceptable, but very good.

For this shot of the pronghorns taken in central Montana, I paired it with my 500mm giving me a 1000mm to help fill the frame. I rarely leave home these days without this converter being in my bag.

Montana’s Endless Winter

February 19, 2009 by Jason Savage Leave a Comment

Wow-A whole month has gone by since my last post! I thought I just posted this last week. Time certainly has a way of slipping by when things are going on.

As those of you who live in Montana know by now, we are in the final segment of Montana’s winter-you know, the one that last for all eternity. Brown, no snow, ugly, etc…

Don’t get me wrong, winters in Montana are beautiful, dramatic and have lots to offer in way of the outdoors, but still, the last part just seems to drag. Especially with spring looming a couple months away.

I finally did sneak out to get some Photography in last weekend and took a quick drive down to Yellowstone. I wasn’t really feeling the vibe all that well down there and was having a hard time getting inspired. I really love Yellowstone in the winter, but the weather was not cooperating and all of the wildlife seemed to be taking a vacation.

Funny but on my way down, I stopped to shoot some antelope 30 minutes from my home and on the way back from Yellowstone, again shot some stuff around the same spot. I could have saved burning all the fuel and hung out close by it seems.

Hopefully we will have a short rest of the winter and Spring will arrive early, if not we will have to start getting more creative with the, umm… bleak landscapes.

Was out and about around the Missouri River this evening and was hanging out with some galloping Pronghorns near sunset. I love watching these guys run, as they are blazing fast. They usually don’t stick around long enough to allow you to get to close, but they do make an impressive sight. Beautiful animal.

Things around Central Montana right now are a definite contrast to how it was a few weeks ago. Temps have been in the 40’s and even 50’s the last week and most of the snow has melted. I’m sure the mild temps won’t last long, but it’s a nice break from the sub-zero weather we were having.

No matter what the conditions, it was nice to be out along the Missouri. There is such a diversity and richness of wildlife along the river and always something to be seen.
